The Heidleberg Oilers showed why they are defending 2A champions and one of the best small schools in the state of Mississippi on Friday night.
The Oilers rolled up 388 yards in just 28 plays as they rolled to a 76-6 win over Newton on Friday night in the first round of the Class 2A playoffs.
Newton finishes the season with a 2-9 record while Heidelberg moves to 9-2 on the season and is the favorite to repeat as 2A championship this season.
“We just missed a bunch of tackles, especially in the second half,” Newton coach Jeffrey Crosby said. “The kids from Heidelberg just want to win and we got what we deserved. They were just that much more athletic than we were. We kept coaching them up and trying to get them in the right direction but we kind of gave up a little bit, especially in the second half.”
Heidelberg scored on a 46-yard run, a 20-yard run and a 5-yard run and led 20-0 at the end of the first quarter.
The Oilers poured it on in the second quarter as they scored on a 15-yard pass, a 48-yard pass, a 23-yard interception return, a 20-yard fumble recovery and a 14-yard pass to take a 58-0 lead at the half.
The Oilers added a 21-yard pass and a 16-yard run as they extended the lead to 72-0. Newton finally scored on a 15-yard pass to Jymarques Holder to cut the lead to 72-6.
Heidelberg added a 10-yard run for the final margin of 76-6.
“We accomplished two of the goals I had set which was to break the losing streak and make the playoffs and we did both of those,” Crosby said. “We have to get bigger, faster and stronger. We will start working in the weight room on Monday and get back to work. We are young and have a lot of growing up to do. Newton is getting better and will continue to get better as the year goes on.”
