A local Marine was recently honored in Singapore after taking action to save a person from drowning back in September.
First Lieutenant Charles ‘Caleb’ Dube, from Stratton, and fellow Marine Makayla Miles received the Community Lifesaver Award from the Singapore Civil Defense Force during a ceremony in October. The award is a prestigious honor that is given to individuals who have gone above and beyond to save lives.
Dube, stationed in Okinawa, Japan and currently serving as an Aide-De-Camp for the 3rd Marines Logistics Group under Brigadier General Adam L. Chalkley, was on a trip to Singapore with his Brigadier General on the evening of September 18 when he noticed someone drowning outside the Fullerton Hotel. After Dube jumped in and bought the victim to land, Miles was able to assist the victim by getting water out of her lungs before first responders arrived.
Along with a ceremony and award, Dube was honored with a tour of the U.S. Embassy in Singapore and meeting the U.S. Ambassador to Singapore, Jonathan Kaplan.
Dube is the son of Chuck and Rita Dube and the grandson of the late Brewer and Clara McMullan from Stratton.
