Gasoline prices in Mississippi have seen a slight increase over the past week, with the average price per gallon rising by 1.7 cents to $2.92, according to a recent survey conducted by GasBuddy. Despite this minor uptick, prices in the state are still 5.7 cents lower than a month ago and 37.4 cents lower than the same time last year.
The national average for gasoline has decreased by 3.2 cents over the past week, now standing at $3.41 per gallon. This national average reflects a drop of 11.6 cents from a month ago and a significant 42.5-cent decline from last year.
In Mississippi, the price variation remains notable. The cheapest gas in the state was recorded at $2.61 per gallon, while the most expensive was $3.49, an 88-cent difference. Neighboring areas reported similar trends, with Baton Rouge seeing a decrease of 3.8 cents to $2.95 per gallon and Louisiana dropping by 1.1 cents to $2.96 per gallon. Jackson, however, experienced a slight increase, with prices rising by 2.3 cents to $2.91 per gallon.
Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, noted the broader trends affecting fuel prices as the summer driving season winds down. "We continue to see gasoline prices declining in most of the country as demand remains muted," De Haan said. He also pointed out the significant drop in diesel prices, which have reached their lowest level since January 2022.
As the Gulf Coast region enters peak hurricane season, De Haan expressed cautious optimism about the continued decline in gas prices. "As long as we can avoid a major hurricane threatening refineries in the Gulf region, I believe we could see declines continue into this week," he stated.
