Newton County’s Frink wins Okatibbee meet
Newton County’s Isaac Frink continued his strong running this fall as he won the Okatibbee meet on Saturday hosted by West Lauderdale.
Frink finished first in the even with an overall time of 18:43, which was 22 seconds faster than the second place finisher.
The Cougars finished in second place overall with a team score of 30 while West Lauderdale was first with a team score of 29.
Also placing for Newton County was Sebastian Johnson in fourth with a time of 19:33 while Davion Hillie was sixth with a time of 19:44. Cole Tadlock was seventh with a time of 19:46 and Jesse Hillman rounded out the scoring for Newton County by finishing 13th with a time of 20L45.
Also competing for Newton County was Giovani Cervantes (18th, 21:24) and Ethan Terell (19th, 21:27).
On the girls side, Newton County finished third in the event with a team score of 61, finishing behind West Lauderdale who had 41 points and Lamar School which had 53 points.
Placing for Newton County was Ava Way in sixth with a time a time of 23:38, Josie Tullos in eighth with a time of 24:31, Marilyn Tullos in 16th with a time of 25:52, Grace Wade with a time of 26:25 and Casey Dube in 20th with a time of 26:26. Also competing for County was Kaitlyn Cutway in 21st with a time of 26:44 and Remini Nickey in 30th with a time of 30:13.
Union volleyball wins three matches
The Union volleyball team picked up three big wins this past week.
The Lady Yellowjackets swept a pair of games from visiting Newton on Tuesday as they beat the Lady Tigers 3-1 in the first match and 3-0 in the second match.
On Thursday, the Lady Yellowjackets grabbed another big win as they beat Noxapater 3-2. After losing the first set 25-19, Union bounced back and won the next two sets, 25-15 and 25-20. But Noxapater came back and took the fourth set 25-17 to tie the match at 2-2. The Lady Yellowjackets took the third and deciding set 15-11 to take the win.
Union improves to 5-4 on the season. Union is scheduled to travel to Neshoba Central on Tuesday in their only action this week.
