The Sebastopol Bobcats finished off one of the most successful football seasons in school history last week.
The Bobcats improved to 9-2 on the season as they took an easy 34-3 win over homestanding Sacred Heart on Friday night.
The Bobcats advance in the Class 1A playoffs as the No. 2 seed out of Region 4-1A. The Bobcats were scheduled to host Ethel on Friday night, but coach Nicky Mooney was informed on Sunday night that Ethel was forfeiting because of a COVID outbreak in the school.
With a playoff spot already secured, the Bobcats made quick work of Sacred Heart on Friday night.
“The best thing I can say is we came out and took care of business and didn’t get anybody hurt,” Mooney said. “And then we just went through the motions in the second half. But I thought we did what we needed to do in the first half. I thought David Williams did a really good job of running the football. He just gets better and better every week.”
Sacred Heart got the ball to start the game but were forced to punt on a three and out. The Bobcats got a big 55-yard run from David Williams and then Jaden Mann hit Jahiem Johnson on a shuffle pass for a 4-yard touchdown pass to cap off a six-play, 80-yard drive. Cy Mooney hit the PAT and Sebastopol led 7-0.
Sebastopol’s second score also came in the passing game midway through the first quarter when Mann hit Johnson on a 52-yard touchdown pass. The try for two failed and Sebastopol led 13-0.
After a fumble recovery by Mooney, Mann threw his third touchdown of the game on a 14-yard screen pass to Williams. Mooney booted the PAT and the Bobcats led 20-0.
Sacred Heart got a 21-yard field goal on the next possession for their only points of the game to cut the score to 20-3.
The Bobcats responded with a six-play, 57-yard drive as Williams finished off the drive with a 27-yard run with 6:41 left in the half. Mooney booted the PAT and Sebastopol led 27-3.
After an interception by Johnson, the Bobcats ran out the remainder of the half with a 13-play, 65-yard drive. Mann threw his fourth touchdown pass of the game with a 10-yard pass to Williams with five seconds left in the half. Mooney hit the PAT and Sebastopol led 34-3.
“I thought we played okay on defense but could have played better,” Mooney said. “Now I will say that was the best I have seen Sacred Heart all year. I thought their quarterback threw it well, but they dropped some passes. They only got three points and we should have blocked that kick. They got close one other time, but we stopped them. The clock ran the entire second half, so it went pretty quick.”
Sacred Heart had just 101 yards of total offense with 86 yards passing and 15 yards rushing on 20 carries.
