The post-season awards just keep coming for former Newton County Academy standout Kemp Alderman.
After winning the Ferriss Trophy as Mississippi’s top collegiate baseball player, Alderman has garnered several other postseason honors.
Alderman was recently named a second-team selection by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association as one of six outfielders. This is the first All-America honor for Alderman in his career. He was also named Second Team All-SEC pick and a First Team All-South Region.
“It was one of the greatest years that any hitter has every had at Ole Miss,” Ole Miss coach Mike Bianco said at the Ferriss Cup presentation. “What a great representative of the college and college baseball in general. It kind of epitomizes what college baseball is all about. Here is a talented kid but what has gotten him on that stage is his work ethic. He has continued to work hard and get better and basically become the best college baseball player in the state of Mississippi. I’m really proud of him.”
Alderman had a breakout season for the Rebels. Alderman led Ole Miss in nearly every offensive category, hitting .376 with a slugging percentage of .709 and on-base percentage of .440. He had 80 hits with 61 RBI, 19 home runs, and 151 total bases. He also led the team in two-out RBI (23) and batting average with runners on base (.393).
Last year, Alderman hit .286 as a sophomore with 11 home runs and 45 RBIs and helped lead the Rebels to the national championship.
Alderman is eligible for the MLB Draft, which will be July 9-11. According to mlb.com, Alderman is listed as the No. 62 overall prospect in the draft. But the junior has not said whether or not he will sign with a team or return to Ole Miss for his senior season. The Rebels went 25-29 this past season and finished 6-24 in the SEC and missed the conference tournament a year after winning the national championship.
