Cougars head to quarterfinals

When Newton County quarterback Damon Mapp went down in week five with an injury against Union, the Cougars went into a tailspin with four straight losses.

But that was a distant memory on Friday night as Mapp returned to the starting lineup and helped guide the Cougars to a last-minute win.

County girls get win, boys fall twice

Basketball season is in full swing at Newton County even though the football team is still in the Class 4A playoffs.

That showed this week as the Cougars lost a pair of contests, falling 64-38 to Leake Central and 75-33 to Morton. The Lady Cougars split their two games, beating Morton 43-39 and falling 51-48 to Leake Central.

VIDEO: Newton County defeats Moss Point in 2nd round of playoffs

Cougars survive and advance

The Newton County football team took a huge step forward last week.

The Cougars used a stingy defense and took an 18-14 win over Lanier in the first round of the Class 4A playoffs.

With the win, the Cougars improve to 7-5 on the season and will host Moss Point on Friday night in the second round of the. Class 4A playoffs.
