Kickin’ It With Kam, a new sneaker and streetwear store, officially opened its doors with a ribbon cutting on Saturday, March 29. The event was hosted by the Greater Decatur Chamber of Commerce at the store’s location, 15 South 5th Avenue. Local food truck Muddy B’s was also on site to help celebrate the opening.
The store is owned by Kamon Shelwood, who is originally from Newton and graduated from Newton County High School.
“Kickin It With Kam,” Shelwood said when asked the name of the store. “Kamon Shelwood,” he added, spelling his name.
Shelwood said the store sells “Retro Jordans, Yeezys. Mostly main of the hype B shoes that are bigger in today's world.” He added, “That’s most basically the shoe side what I sell, and I sell a lot of Black-owned clothing that's designer, just different clothing that the kids are into nowadays.”

Hours are still being finalized. “Right now, we're just starting off and I work offshore, but I'm gonna play it by ear in the first couple days while I'm home, then I'm gonna have it set out somewhere sometime around next week. It'll probably be around lunch to 8 p.m.”
When not working at the store, Shelwood works offshore. “I work on the tow boats,” he said. “I cook, clean, I build tows, making sure the work environment is safe for everybody else on the boat.”
Shelwood said his interest in fashion started early. “I've always been into like the fashion since I was a kid. Teachers thought I had different shoes on every day. I used to come in there with different pair of shoes on every day. And I used to play college baseball, then I stopped playing ball, started selling some shoes and it just took off.”
He played baseball at Coahoma Community College in Clarksdale.
To the community, Shelwood had a message: “I'm in Decatur, Mississippi. Most of you know me, if you don't, come get to know me.”
