Union Community Center Vandalized Over Holidays by Minors
After discovering the Union Community Center was vandalized over the holidays, the Union Police department announced that tips from community members had helped them pinpoint the minors who were involved.
Prior to solving the case, Union PD asked the community for their help in getting information on the culprits.
“We are proud of the Community Center and it is obvious, due to it being used almost every weekend, that the citizens in and around Union are proud of it too,” the statement read. “So please help us find the person/people that did this damage. If you know something say something!!!”
County Fire Services Releases 2025 Responses Report
Newton County fire departments reported a total of 1,231 total incidents that they responded to in 2025. According to the recently released report, county fire departments responded to the following incidents in the previous year: 107 structure fires, 167 woods/brush/grass fires, 40 vehicle/mobile property fires, 572 medical/assist EMS, 122 MVC/rescue responses, 32 hazardous materials responses, 120 canceled responses, and 71 false alarms.
North Decatur Water Association Announced Rate Increase
North Decatur Water Association customers will see a rate increase in March of 2026. According to the NDWA, the minimum rate of $25 for 2,000 gallons will remain the same, while the rate for usage above the minimum 2,000 gallons will increase by a dollar, from $6.50 per 1,000 gallons to $7.50 per 1,000 gallons.
