It was a busy week in the hardwoods for the Newton basketball teams.
The Newton girls won two ask three games last week beating Philadelphia 51-23, Southeast Lauderdale 38-33 and Bay Springs 48-40.
The Newton boys won only one of three games with their lone win over Philadelphia 63-47. They lost 66-45 to Southeast Lauderdale and 63-51to Bay Springs.
There’s only one game on the schedule this week as the girls will play at Jackson Academy on Tuesday.
Newton girls 51, Philadelphia 23
The Lady Tigers outscored the Lady Tornadoes in every period and rolled to a 28-point win.
Newton started fast and outscored Philly 15-8 in the first period and 10-6 in the second to lead 25-14 at the half. Newton then put the game away in the second half and outscored Philly 17-5 in the third and 9-4 in the fourth.
Jamiya Jones led Newton with 15 points while Eunice Taylor had 12 points. Akyrin Berry also chipped in six points for the Lady Tigers.
Newton boys 63, Philadelphia 47
The Tigers finished strong in each half and rolled to a 16-point win over the Tornadoes on Tuesday.
Each team scored 10 points in the first period before Newton outscored Philly 16-5 in the second to lead 26-15 at the half. Philly then outscored Newton 19-17 in the third period to cut the lead to 43-34 going to the fourth. But the Tigers outscored Philly 20-13 in the fourth for the final margin.
Kaden Robinson led Newton with 26 points while Jimare Kincaid had 14 points. Kamerion Moore also had nine points for the Tigers.
Newton girls 38, Southeast Lauderdale 33
The Newton girls took a hard-fought five-point win over Southeast Lauderdale.
Jamiya Jones had a huge game for Newton with 29 points, eight rebounds and six steals. Jordyn Bolar had four points while Eunice Taylor had nine rebounds. Dayshia Irby also had seven rebounds.
SE Lauderdale boys 66, Newton 45
Southeast outscored Newton in three of the four periods to take a 21-point win on Monday.
Southeast jumped out to a 14-11 lead in the first period and then outscored Newton 20-7 in the second period to lead 34-18 at the half. Newton fought back and outscored Southeast 18-17 in the third and trailed 51-36 going to the fourth. Southeast finished by outscoring Newton 15-9 for the final margin.
Kaden Robinson led Newton with 23 points and five steals while Kamerion Moore had five points. Jimare Kincade had five points and six rebounds while Desmond Stevens also had nine rebounds for the Tigers.
Newton girls 48, Bay Springs 40
The Lady Tigers took an eight-point win over the Lady Bulldogs on Friday.
Newton scored 15 points in the first and fourth quarters, sandwiched around a pair of nine-point quarters in the middle two periods.
Jamiya Jones led Newton with 24 points while Anniston Adkins had nine points. Euniya Taylor also had eight points for the Lady Tigers.
Bay Springs boys 63, Newton 51
The Bulldogs jumped out to an early lead and held on to take a 12-point win over the Tigers on Friday.
Bay Springs jumped out to a 20-9 lead in the first period while Newton took the second period 17-16 to cut the lead to 36-26. Bay Springs took the third period 9-7 while each team scored 18 points in the fourth.
Kaden Robinson led Newton with 30 points while Kamerion Moore and ZaKarian Pugh each had seven points.
