The Newton basketball teams had a rough time at Quitman last week, losing all four games they played.
The Newton boys lost 78-48 to Quitman and 62-61 to Heidelberg while the Newton girls lost 43-33 to Presbyterian Christian and 29-21 to Richton.
Newton will open district play this week as they host Puckett on Tuesday and Pelahatchie on Friday. They will finish the week on Saturday when they travel to West Lauderdale.
Quitman boys 78, Newton 48
The Panthers used a steady offense to roll to a 30-point win over the Tigers on Monday at the Quitman Shootout.
Quitman jumped out to a. 20-11 lead in the first period and then outscored Newton 25-7 in the second to lead 45-18 at the half. Quitman continued to extend its lead in the third as they outscored Newton 22-18 to lead 67-36 going to the fourth. The Tigers took the fourth period 12-11 for the final margin.
Kaden Robinson continued his strong play with 29 points while ZaKarian Pugh had nine points.
Heidelberg boys 62, Newton 61
The Tigers overcame a big double-digit deficit but fell short against the Oilers on Tuesday.
Heidelberg jumped out to an 18-8 lead in the first period and then outscored Newton 19-14 to lead 37-22 at the half. Newton started to mount its comeback in the third, outscoring Heidelberg 16-13 to cut the lead to 50-38 going to the fourth. Newton rallied in the fourth and took the lead at 61-60 with 25.2 seconds left in the game. Heidelberg then hit two free throws with 5.2 seconds left to play and Robinson missed a shot at the buzzer as the Oilers held on for the win.
Robinson led Newton with 28 points while Jy’Marques Holder had 10 points. ZaKarian Pugh also chipped in nine points for the Tigers.
Presbyterian Christian girls 43, Newton 33
The Lady Tigers fell by 10 points to Presbyterian Christian last week at the Quitman Shootout.
Jamiyah Jones led Newton with 14 points while Euniya Taylor had 13 points.
Richton girls 29, Newton 21
The Lady Tigers dropped a second straight contest at Quitman, falling to Richton by eight points.
Richton outscored Newton 9-6 in the first period while Newton took the second period 8-4 as the Lady Tigers led 14-13 at the half. Richton pulled away in the second half, outscoring Newton 8-5 in the third and 8-2 in the fourth.
Euniya Taylor led Newton with nine points while Anniston Adkins had six points.
