The Newton basketball teams continued to show their dominance in Division 5-2A as both teams enter this week’s tournament as the top seed.
The Lady Tigers won two out of three games this week as they beat Lake 31-29 on Monday and Scott Central 30-27 on Tuesday. The Lady Tigers lost 41-34 to Union on Friday for their first division loss of the season.
The Tigers won all three of their games this week as they beat Lake 61-32 on Monday and Scott Central 69-52 on Tuesday. They finished the week out with 53-46 win over Union.
Both Newton teams enter the division tournament this week as the No. 1 seed. The Lady Tigers will play the winner of Scott Central and Philadelphia on Thursday at 4 p.m.
The Tigers will play the winner of Scott Central and Lake on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
Newton girls 31, Lake 29
The Lady Tigers held on in the second half to take a two-point win over the Lady Hornets on Monday night.
Newton led 12-10 at the end of the first period and outscored the Lady Tigers 12-6 in the second period to lead 24-16 at the half. But Lake used a stingy defense in the second half to make it close as they outscored Newton 9-3 in the third to cut the score to 27-25 going to the fourth. Each team scored four points in the fourth period for the final margin.
Ja’Leah Hickmon and Zia Shields led Newton with 13 points apiece while Kania Arrington had five points.
Laneisha Palm and Tra’Shaylah Wilson each had 12 points apiece.
Newton boys 61, Lake 32
The Tigers pulled away in the middle two periods to take a 29-point win over the Hornets on Monday night.
Lake led 9-5 at the end of the fist period before Newton outscored the Hornets 22-10 in the second period to lead 27-19 at the half. The Tigers pulled away in the third period as they outscored Newton 21-8 to lead 48-27 going o the fourth.
Jabez Blaylock, Camron Blaylock and Melvin Smith each had nine points apiece for Newton.
Newton girls 30, Scott Central 27
The Lady Tigers built a first-half lead and held on in the second half to take a three-point win over the Lady Rebels on Tuesday.
Newton used a stingy defense to build a big lead in the first half as they outscored Scott Central 5-1 in the first and 7-4 in the second to lead 12-5 at the half. Newton outscored Scott 12-11 in the third to lead 24-16 going into the fourth. Scott Central made it close in the fourth, outscoring Newton 11-6 for the final margin.
Ja’Leah Hickmon led Newton with 13 points while Zia Shields had 12 points.
Newton boys 69, Scott Central 52
The Tigers built a big lead in the first half and took a 17-point win over the Rebels.
Newton led 14-8 at the end of the first and then outscored Scott Central 16-9 in the second to lead 30-17 at the half. Scott Central outscored Newton 23-18 in the third to cut the lead to 48-40 going into the fourth. The Tigers finished out the game by outscoring the Rebels 21-12 to take the win.
Jabez Blaylock led Newton with 13 points while Justin Thompson had 10 points.
