The Newton County Academy softball team kicked off the season this past weekend with a bang.
The Lady Generals opened with a 5-4 win over Lamar Christian on a walk-off home run from Adriane Luke but then dropped a 6-1 contest to Columbia on Saturday.
NCA was scheduled to host Hartfield on Monday and will then play at Laurel Christian on Friday.
NCA 5, Lamar Christian 4
The Lady Generals got a walk-off home run from Adriane Luke to take a win over the Lady Lady Lions on Friday in the season opener.
Lamar scored two runs in the first and second innings and led 4-0. But NCA answered with three runs in the third and one in the fourth to tie the game at 4-4. After two scoreless innings, Luke hit the solo home run over the center field fence to lead off the seventh to take the win.
NCA had six hits in the contest as Luke was 2-for-3 with a triple, two runs scored, two stolen bases and two RBIs. Marlie Clare Kelly was 2-for-3 with a triple and a run scored. Jamie Stamper also singled and had an RBI while Sophia Munn singled and had an RBI.
Kelly started in the circle and pitched 3 1/3 innings and gave up four runs with only one earned on three hits and two walks. Munn pitched the last 3 2/3 innings and gave up just one hit and struck out two to pick up the win.
Columbia 6, NCA 1
The Lady Cougars took an early lead and took a five-run win on Saturday over the Lady Generals.
Columbia scored two runs in the first and second innings while NCA scored its only run in the second inning. The Lady Cougars added single runs in the third and fourth innings.
NCA had just four hits, led by Brooklyn Vaughn who was 2-for-2 and had a stolen base. Marlie Clare Kelly singled and scored NCA’s only run while Ashlynn Chapman also singled for NCA.
Kelly started in the circle and pitched all four innings and gave up six runs with only two earned.
