The Newton County Lady Cougars continued their strong play with a pair of double-digit wins last week.
The Lady Cougars beat Newton 41-29 and then dominated Leake Central 57-10 on Friday.
The Cougars split their two games, beating Newton 68-29 but falling 59-44 to Leake Central.
Newton County is scheduled to play at Choctaw Central on Tuesday and at West Lauderdale on Friday. They will end the regular season next Tuesday as they host Northeast Lauderdale.
Newton County girls 41, Newton 29
The Lady Cougars started fast and used a stingy defense to take a 12-point win over the Lady Tigers on Monday at the MLK Classic at ECCC.
County jumped out to a 10-1 lead in the first period and outscored Newton 14-10 in the second to lead 24-11 at the half. County extended the lead in the third period, outscoring Newton 11-8 to lead 35-19 going to the fourth. Newton took the fourth period 10-6 for the final margin.
Nalayah Phillips led County with 10 points while Dazzle Tubby and Felicia King each had eight points. Payton Avery also scored six points for the Lady Cougars.
Jamiya Jones led all scorers with 17 points for Newton while Anniston Adkins also had six points.
Newton County boys 68, Newton 39
The Cougars pulled away in the second half took a 29-point win over the Tigers.
The game was tight in the first half as County outscored Newton 14-9 in the first and 15-10 in the second to lead 29-19 at the half. County continued to extend the lead in the second half, outscoring Newton 13-11 in the third and 26-9 in the fourth to take the win.
Lorenzoe Gardner led Newton County with 28 points while Brayson Jefferson had 11 points. Jayce Reed and Davion Roberts each had seven points.
Kaden Robinson led Newton with 14 points while Kam Moore and Jadan Reed each had seven points.
Newton County girls 57, Leake Central 10
The Lady Cougars dominated early and cruised to a 47-point win over the Lady Gators.
Newton County jumped out to a 19-1 lead in the first period and led 27-5 at the half. County then outscored Leake 22-1 in the third to take a 49-6 lead into the fourth. County took the fourth period 8-4 for the final margin.
Kori Tillman led Newton County with 18 points while Nalayah Phillips had 17 points. Dazzle tubby also had seven points for the Lady Cougars.
Leake Central boys 59, Newton County 44
The Cougars couldn’t hold onto an early lead as the Gators came back to take a 15-point win on Friday.
County led 15-12 at the end of the first while Leake bounced back and outscored the Cougars 22-11 in the second to take a 34-26 lead at the half. County battled back and outscored Leake 16-12 in the third to cut the lead to 46-42. But Leake finished strong and outscored County 13-2 to take the win.
Jayce Beale led Newton County with 14 points while Brayson Jefferson had 11 points. Davion Roberts also had 10 points for the Cougars.
