The Dixie National Jr. Roundup is around the corner along with our Newton County Jr. Livestock Show and Sale which is scheduled for Jan. 2, 2025. The show and sale will be held at the Newton County Show barn located at 615 Coliseum Dr in Newton. The show begins at 9 AM followed by the luncheon and auction at noon. Drew Wagner will be coming from West Texas A&M University to judge, and Ted Hollingsworth will be auctioneering following the buyer’s luncheon which starts at 11:30 AM. Market animals will be available for purchase including finished steers, lambs and hogs and will be auctioned off to the highest bidder. These animals will be freezer ready, and the purchase is tax deductible for the buyer, so it really is a win/win for the supporters. Breeding show cattle will be on display for the public as well and everyone is welcome to watch the show, visit with exhibitors and ask questions. We will have the always entertaining “Pee Wee” Showmanship for the little ones to get involved too. The shows are fun to watch and see who is going to take home the champion buckles and banners. Youth move on to the Southwest District Show in Jackson January 15 – 17th followed by the Dixie National Jr. Show which runs January 27th through February 6th with the Sale of Champions.
Local 4-H and FFA youth enter their animals by becoming a 4-H member and filling out a nomination form. Animals are fed, trained, and cared for by the exhibitors and their families where they are shown at the county, district, and state level under the guidance of their county agent and/or FFA advisor. It teaches such a strong work ethic and about having a business. It teaches kids so much about life, business, and finances. The money helps these kids with college funds and expanding their farms and projects. Teaching youth how to become businessman and future leaders is the whole goal of the program. Not only are the market animal purchases tax deductible for the buyer, but they end up with a quality home raised product that is locally sourced. For more information on the Newton Co. Junior Livestock program and becoming involved in 4-H please call MSU Extension service at 601-635-7011 or you can email Shani Hay at smh964@msstate.edu.
