There is a new sheriff in Newton County.
Joedy Pennington, former Decatur Chief of Police and longtime law enforcement officer, was sworn in last week as top law enforcement officer in Newton County. He officially took office on Sunday following the retirement of 24-year sheriff Jackie Knight, who stepped down a month early.
Pennington was previously elected in the Nov. 5 general election to Knight’s position beginning Jan. 1, 2020, however, the board approved appointing him as interim sheriff upon the recommendation of County attorney Jason Mangum. Pennington will serve as interim sheriff for the remainder of Knight’s term before taking over the role as the elected sheriff.
Pennington defeated Randy Patrick with more than 65 percent of the vote. He also won the Republican primary over challengers Billy Pat Walker and Sammy Stevens without a run-off election. Pennington’s term will run through December 2023.
