MDOT District 5 employee Nathan Perkins, from Decatur, recently won first place in the Tractor Mower event at the annual Southeast Regional Roadeo Competition held in Raleigh, North Carolina. Perkins’ first place finish led the way for MDOT coming in ninth overall among contestants from 12 states in the competition.
Other top finisher’s for MDOT were Michael Parnell from District 1, who placed third in the Tandem Axle Dump Truck event, and Allen Stewart from District 7, who placed fifth in the Tractor Truck with Lowboy event.
"Congratulations to our roadside workers for showing out at this year’s Regional Roadeo Competition! The expertise showcased at the competition is a reflection of your dedication, technical abilities and commitment to keeping our roads safe daily,” said Mississippi Transportation Commission Chairman Willie Simmons. “Thank you all for paving the way towards a safer and more connected transportation infrastructure in Mississippi.”
Focusing on efficiency and skill, roadeos provide employees with an opportunity to display their mastery of vehicle handling, trailer maneuvering and heavy equipment precision. The event and judging criteria provide feedback and help operators evaluate their strengths and challenges. Operators improve techniques and learn new skills while engaging in some friendly competition.
