Immediately after holding their Budget Hearing on Aug. 1, the Newton County School District Board of Trustees held a brief special called meeting where they discussed the need of an additional kindergarten classroom, approved hiring a kindergarten teacher and approve d superintendent Brooke Sibley’s contract and pay structure.
During the kindergarten discussion, Sibley shared with the board that as of that day, the district had 139 kindergarten students after four more had enrolled the prior day. According to Sibley, they have six kindergarten classes, but to service the kindergarten students the way that is needed, they have created a seventh classroom.
When asked if there was room for another room, Sibley said that there is some extra space at the elementary school after sixth grade was moved to the middle school.
“Yes, we’ve worked very hard to get another kindergarten class put together in the last two days,” said Sibley.
Sibley also recommended hiring Emily Cater to fill a kindergarten teacher position that was open. The board voted to approve the hire.
