The Newton County Cougars took a quick trip to the Coast and played two college-style matches in Mobile on Monday while splitting a pair of matches on Tuesday in Ocean Springs and Pascagoula.
On Monday, Newton County played at the Mobile Tennis Center in a college format. In the first match Newton County lost 7-2 to St. Paul’s in a boys match. In singles, Hayes Holliman lost 8-1 at the No. 1 spot while Caden Chaney lost 8-3 at the No. 2 spot. Drew Walker lost 9-7 at the No. 3 spot while Carson Davis lost 8-3 at the No. 4 spot. Fisher Edwards lost 8-0 at the No. 5 spot while Langston Coleman won 9-4 (4) at the No. 6 spot. In boys doubles, Walker and Holliman lost 8-4 at the No. 1 spot while Chaney and Davis won 8-6 at the No. 2 spot. In the last match, Coleman and Edwards lost 8-4 at the No. 3 spot.
The Lady Cougars then took a 5-4 win over UMS-Wright. In girls single, Reese Thoms won 8-3 at the No. 1 spot while Katie Lynne McDonald won 8-6 at the No. 2 spot. Alissa Luke won 8-2 at the No. 3 spot while Erin Tullos won 8-2 at the No. 4 spot. Abby Williams lost 8-6 at the No. 5 spot while Ansley Sykes lost 8-5 at the No. 6 spot. In doubles, McDonald and Thoms won 8-1 at the No. 1 spot while Williams and Tullos lost 8-3 at the No. 2 spot. Russell and Sykes lost 8-7 (5) at the No. 3 spot.
In their second match of the day, the Newton County boys lost 8-1 to McGill-Toolen. In boys singles, Holliman lost 8-2 at the No. 1 spot while Chaney lost 8-1 at the No. 2 spot. Drew Walker lost 8-1 at the No. 3 spot while Carson Davis lost 8-5 at the No. 4 spot. Edwards lost 8-5 at the No. 5 spot while Coleman lost 8-5 at the No. 6 spot. Holliman and Walker won 8-5 at the No. 1 doubles spot while Chaney and Davis lost 8-3 at the No. 2 spot. Coleman and Edwards lost 8-1 at the No. 3 spot.
In their last match, the County girls lost 8-1 to McGill-Toolen. In singles, Thoms lost 8-1 at the No.1 spot while McDonald lost 8-6 at the No. 2 spot. Luke got the only win with an 8-6 victory at the No. 3 spot while Tullos lost 8-1 at the No. 4 spot. Williams lost 8-0 at the No. 5 spot while Sykes lost 8-3 at the No. 6 spot. In doubles, McDonald and Thoms lost 8-2 at the No. 1 spot while Williams and Tullos lost 8-3 at the No. 2 spot. Russell and Sykes lost 8-5 at the No. 3 spot.
On Tuesday, Newton County lost 6-1 to Ocean Springs. In singles, Holliman lost 6-1, 6-2 on the boys side while Luke won by default at the girls spot. In boys doubles, Davis and Walker lost 6-2, 6-1 at the No. 1 spot while Coleman and Edwards lost 6-3, 6-3 at the No. 2 spot. In girls doubles, McDonald and Thoms lost 6-1, 6-4 at the No. 1 spot while Williams and Tullos lost 6-3, 3-6, 10-7 at the No. 2 spot. In mixed doubles, Chaney and Russell lost 6-0, 6-4.
In their second match of the day on Tuesday, County beat Resurrection 4-3. In singles, Edwards lost 6-0, 6-0 on the boys side while Luke lost 7-5, 6-2 on the girls side. In boys doubles, Walker and Holliman won 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 1 spot while Davis and Coleman won 6-2, 6-0 at the No. 2 spot. In girls doubles, McDonald and Thoms won 6-0, 6-1 at the No. 1 spot while Williams and Tullos won 6-3, 6-2 at the No. 2 spot. In mixed doubles, Chaney and Russell lost 6-4, 2-6, 10-6.
Newton County moved to 7-3 on the season.
