Local first responders battled a fire at a vacant home in Newton early Wednesday morning, only to be called back hours later after the smoldering embers reignited.
On the evening of Tuesday, Feb. 17, the Newton Fire Department received the initial call at 11:43 p.m. to a structure fire located at 102 West Tatum Street. Assisting with the response was volunteer fire departments from Hickory and Decatur, who worked diligently to contain and extinguish the flames.
However, at 6:40 a.m. Wednesday, Newton F.D. received a second call to the location after the fire flared up again. Volunteer fire departments from Lake, Beulah Hubbard, and Greenfield assisted.
No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
