After making a strong run to the Big House and the Class 2A semifinals, Newton fell 46-36 to East Union on Wednesday morning.
Newton and East Union played a tight first half as the Lady Urchins led 7-4 at the end of the first period. But Newton outscored East Union 15-12 in the second period to tie the game at 19-19 at the half.
But the tide turned in the second half as East Union outscored started to pound the ball on the inside and outscored Newton 12-5 to take a 31-24 lead into the fourth period. The Lady Urchins were able to keep Newton at bay in the fourth period as they outscored the Lady Tigers 15-12 to advance to the Class 2A finals, where they eventually lost to Ingomar.
Erin Ware, who played all 32 minutes, led Newton with 15 points and seven rebounds but also led the team with six turnovers. Jamiya Jones had nine points and 12 rebounds, including seven offensive boards. Anniston Adkins had five points and seven rebounds while Sommer Jordan had four points.
On the game, East Union shot 41.5 percent from the field while Newton shot 22.6 percent. Newton was 6-of-32 from the field and 1-of-9 from 3-point range. They were also 6-of-12 from the free-throw line.
