Graduates of Newton High School from the Classes of 1961 through 1965, along with guests, are warmly invited to gather on Saturday, July 25, 2026. Graduates from other NHS classes are also very welcome to join us.
If you fall into this group, chances are good that you once paid less than seventy five cents for a seat at the Roxy Theater in Newton. You may have watched movies like West Side Story, Cat Ballou, The Sound of Music, To Kill a Mockingbird, or A Summer Place. You may even have held hands with someone. After school, WBKN 1410 AM filled the air with hits like I Want to Hold Your Hand, I Can’t Get No Satisfaction, Last Kiss, I Can’t Stop Loving You, Blue Velvet, and My Girl.
This multi-class reunion begins at 4:00 PM with a combined afternoon reception for all attendees. At 6:00 PM, those who choose may enjoy an optional sit down dinner from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the Newton First Baptist Church Family Life Center.
There will be no formal program or presentations. This gathering is simply about reconnecting, figuring out who everyone is now, catching up on life, sharing stories, and reliving memories from our high school years. Conversations may drift to the television shows we grew up with such as American Bandstand, The Andy Griffith Show, Red Skelton, Bonanza, and I Love Lucy. Someone will surely remember the State Baseball Championship when the Tigers lost to Greenville in 1961. In 1963 the Newton Tigers won its first Choctaw Conference on November 22, the day President John F. Kennedy was assassinated.
When this group graduated, a gallon of gas at the Conoco cost thirty cents. A Coke at Miley’s was a dime. A postage stamp cost four cents. John Robert Henry’s cheeseburgers sold for fifteen cents, and a dozen eggs from Garvin’s downtown Piggly Wiggly cost fifty cents.
While we cannot offer those prices today, the committee does need an idea of how many people plan to attend so we can order refreshments and set a fair cost for the optional dinner. Your response will help us make this reunion enjoyable and affordable for everyone.
Please let us know if you plan to attend and how we may contact you. Bob May Planning Committee Member Email: robertLmay@gmail.com, Cell Phone: (417) 350 0597. Please leave your name, phone number and the year you graduated from NHS, please!
