The Newton Police Department has announced the peaceful end of a recent manhunt after Pervis Jermaine Word turned himself in on the morning of Tuesday, July 2. Newton Chief of Police Randy Patrick confirmed that Word, who had been sought following a violent altercation, is now in custody.
Word is facing charges of aggravated assault and failure to yield to blue lights. The incident that sparked the manhunt began on Sunday, July 1, around 9:30 P.M., when Newton Police Officers responded to a 911 call about a domestic disturbance. When officers arrived, they tried to talk to Word, but he responded aggressively and fled in his vehicle.
During the pursuit, Word allegedly fired at and hit a police vehicle. No one was injured in the altercation. The situation then escalated into a manhunt as officers worked to locate and apprehend him.
