A special meeting of the Newton Mayor and Board of Aldermen held on Thursday, Jan. 9, 2025, brought significant changes to the leadership of the Newton Police Department. The meeting addressed retirements, resignations, and appointments for local law enforcement.
The board formally accepted the retirement of Police Chief Randy Patrick, effective Jan. 9. Chief Patrick's departure comes amid heightened tensions concerning crime in the city after a teen was murdered in the city just before Christmas of last year.
Assistant Chief Johnny Martin's resignation was also approved during the meeting. His resignation will take effect on January 23. Martin has accepted a position with East Central Community College as their chief of police.
The board approved the appointment of McKenzie Patrick as Interim Police Chief. Effective Jan. 10, Patrick will assume the role with a salary of $52,000.00. Patrick, who has been with the Newton Police Department for five years, brings experience and determination to the position.
“It’s exciting and frightening at the same time. It’s a lot to take on,” said Patrick. “I’m gonna go out there and do the best that I can as the Interim police chief.” Patrick also emphasized the importance of community involvement in supporting the department. “I want the people to know that it’s not always the police department. We need their help as well,” Patrick said. “So help me help the city. I think that we can turn this city around.”
The next regular board meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 21, at 5:30 p.m. at the Newton City Hall.
