A major new economic development is on the horizon for the Newton community, as a global transport and logistics company prepares to open a distribution center in town.
City of Newton Mayor Jay Powell announced Monday that DSV Global Transport and Logistics will open a distribution center in the former La-Z-Boy warehouse on Scanlan Street.
According to Powell, the facility will primarily handle computer equipment warehousing and distribution and will serve as an extension of the Amazon Fulfillment Center located in Madison, creating a linked operation for efficient logistics support.
The lease for the Newton facility is set to begin on February 2, allowing operations to launch quickly. The distribution center plans to start by hiring 55 employees, with expectations to grow to 70-75 in the near future.
Powell said that although DSV Global Transport and Logistics does not have a Newton location added to their website as of today, job applications are already being accepted through the Madison location's online portal on the DSV Global website, where applicants must create an account to apply. Positions available include forklift drivers, warehouse associates, truck drivers, and managerial roles.
Powell said that news of the new distribution center locating in Newton is a positive step forward for the area's economy, bringing steady employment and increased local spending.
"It’s great news,” he exclaimed. “The more jobs we have, the more money these employees will be spending in our town. It's going to be quite a revenue boost for our community."
Residents interested in applying should visit the DSV Global Transport and Logistics and start the process. As operations ramp up in early February, this development promises to bring fresh opportunities to the area.
