The Newton Tigers struggled on both sides of the football against Scott Central on Friday night.
The Rebels scored on six straight possessions and cruised to a 42-6 win over the Tigers.
Newton falls to 1-6 on the season and 0-3 in division 5-2A play. The Tigers will play at Puckett (1-7) on Friday with a playoff spot on the line.
Newton coach Jeffrey Crosby said the Tigers struggled against the Rebels on both sides of the ball.
“We came out with a game plan but just couldn’t execute,” Crosby said. “We started out good and stopped them on their first drive. But it kind of went downhill from there. It just went downhill late in the second quarter. We had some bad snaps and gave them the ball deep in our territory. We just couldn’t get anything working. The kids are working hard and there were some bright spots. We are still young and still figuring it out.”
After swapping punts to start the game, Scott Central scored the next four possessions in the first half. They scored on runs of 3, 9, 4 and 5 yards and led 28-0 at the half.
Newton threw back-to-back interceptions to start the second half as Scott Central scored on a 10-yard pass and a 13-yard run to go up 42-0.
Newton didn’t score until the last minute of the game as Eric Boone hit Jalen Reed on a 9-yard touchdown pass. The try for two failed for the final of 42-6.
“We are starting seven sophomore and freshmen on defense and are still really young,” Crosby said. “We are really young over there and are still trying to figure it out. Scott Central was very physical, and we are still working on that. Scott Central was a lot better than their record and have been playing a lot better the last couple of weeks.”
Newton had 69 yards passing and minus 36 yards rushing for 33 yards of total offense. Jaden Moore was 5-of-10 passing for 69 yards with two interceptions. Eric Boone also completed one pass for nine yards to Jalen Reed. Jymarques Holder had two catches for 39 yards while Tyzavion Townsend had two catches for 22 yards.
Jamarian Brown led the Tigers with 11 tackles while Jimare Kincaid had nine tackles. Juvelle Green had eight tackles while Xavier Snow had seven tackles. Holder, Desmond Stevens, Kavion Davis and Chrisun Leverette each had six tackles while Rayshon Bunkley and Jalis Hughes each had four tackles.
