Each Newton basketball team was able to pick up a win this past week.
The Tigers took a 67-61 win over Laurel on Monday and then lost 68-57 to Sumter Central on Friday.
The Lady Tigers lost 38-26 to Laurel on Monday and then beat Sumter 50-40 on Friday. They then lost 45-39 to Quitman on Saturday.
Newton will return to play this week with a pair of 5-2A contest, playing at Lake on Tuesday and at Kemper County on Friday.
Newton boys 67, Laurel 61
The Tigers pulled away in the second half and took a six-point win over the Golden Tornadoes.
Newton led 19-14 at the end of the first period and each team scored 15 in the second period as the Tigers led 34-29 at the half. But Laurel then outscored Newton 14-11 in the third period to cut the lead to 45-43. The Tigers then pulled away in the fourth period and outscore the Tornadoes 22-18 to take the win.
Craig Croft led Newton withy 27 points and hit six 3-pointers. Tavion White had 10 points while Kedrick Donald had eight points. Emmanuel Robinson had seven points while D’Traun Brown and Tyreke Snow each had six points apiece.
Laurel girls 38, Newton 26
The Lady Tigers struggled in the first period and dropped a 12-point decision to the Lady Tornadoes on Monday.
Laurel jumped out to a 13-1 lead in the first period and each team scored nine in the second as the Tornadoes led 22-10 at the half. Newton outscored Laurel 10-6 in the third to cut the lead to 28-20 going to the fourth. But Laurel took the fourth period 10-6 for the final margin.
Erin Ware led Newton with 14 points.
Sumter Central boys 68, Newton 57
The Jaguars outscored the Tigers in every period and took an 11-point win on Saturday.
Sumter led 18-13 at the end of the first and outscored Newton 16-14 in the second to lead 34-27 at the half. Sumter continued to extend its lead in the second half and outscored Newton 18-13 in the 19-17 in the fourth.
Tyreke Snow and Craig Croft each had 11 points apiece for Newton.
Newton girls 50, Sumter Central 40
The Lady Tigers used a big third period to pull away and take a 10-point win over the Lady Jaguars.
Newton led 9-6 at the end of the first but Sumter outscored the Lady Tigers 18-10 in the second and led 24-19 at the half. But Newton then outscored Sumter 21-3 in the third to take a 40-27 lead into the fourth.
Erin Ware led Newton with 23 points while Sommer Jordan had six points.
Quitman girls 45, Newton 39
The Lady Panthers pulled away in the second period and held on to take a six-point win over the Lady Tigers.
Each team scored nine points in the first period before Quitman outscored Newton 13-5 in the second and led 22-14 at the half. Quitman took the third period 9-8 and Newton outscored the Lady Panthers 17-14 in the fourth for the final margin.
Erin Ware led Newton with 11 points while Mariana Thames had nine points. Sommer Jordan also chipped in seven points.
