Prepare for a hilariously haunting good time this weekend at the historic Roxy Theatre as the Newton County Theatre Company presents its youth production of “The Canterville Ghost”.
The play, adapted by Tim Kelly from a story written by Oscar Wilde, is a comedic tale of an American family that moves into the historic Canterville Chase in England, which is haunted by the spirit of Sir Simon de Canterville. Realizing the new family isn’t afraid of his ghostly antics, Sir Simon enlists the help of several other ghostly friends, leading to frenzied and extremely hilarious events.
Co-Directed by Marshall Van Zjill and Jonathan Thorne, the play has 20 cast members and 5 crew members. And for the first time ever, this will be a play totally produced by the youth.
“We have 25 kids participating in this and it will be the first that all parts are done by teenagers,” said Thorne. “We have teenagers that are stage managers, they’re in charge of sound and lights, everything.”
Thorne said that the youth, made up of 6th – 12th grade students, have worked really hard in perfecting the play as a whole and invites everyone to come out to see the show.
“We’ve got two newcomers taking part in their first play and they, along with the 23 seasoned theatre participants, have done great in preparing for this weekend,” he said. “They finished blocking in three weeks and they have pretty much perfected all of this on their own and had a lot of fun doing it.”
With three shows planned for the weekend, Thorne invites everyone to come out and support the kids and the Newton Theatre Company.
“This has been a great group of kids and we’ve really enjoyed working with them. We have a lot of seniors in this group that we’re going to miss, and we have a lot of young ones that will step up and take their place. So, we invite you to come support these kids who have done this completely on their own.”
