NOTICE OF PROPOSED BUDGET AND MILLAGE RATES AND REVENUE EQUIVALENCY IN COUNTIES SUBJECT TO APPRAISAL UPDATE REQUIRED IN ORDER TO RECEIVE HOMESTEAD EXEMPTION REIMBURSEMENT FUNDS

Counties and the taxing jurisdictions within them updated their ad valorem appraisal values in the current year as defined in Title 35 Part VI of the Mississippi Administrative Code must comply with the provisions of Section 8 of Senate Bill 2045, 2009 2nd Extraordinary Session, by publishing the millage rate that would have produced the same amount of revenue from ad valorem taxation on property of the jurisdiction that was produced in the fiscal year before the property of the jurisdiction was reappraised.
Newton County was required to update its property values for the 2022 taxable calendar year, which is collected in the 2023 fiscal year.
A millage rate of 35.1 will produce the same amount of revenue from ad valorem taxes for Newton County as was collected the prior year. The millage rate for the previous year was 35.78.
A millage rate of 45.44 for the Union School District will produce the same amount of revenue from ad valorem taxes for the Union School District as was collected the prior year. The millage rate for the previous year was 46.5. The millage rate for the current year is 55.00, representing an increase of 8.5 mills.
A millage rate of 51.23 for the Newton County School District will produce the same amount of revenue from ad valorem taxes for the Newton County School District as was collected the prior year.The millage rate for the previous year was 51.50. The millage rate for the current year is 51.50.
A millage rate of 45.44 for the Newton Municipal School District will produce the same amount of revenue from ad valorem taxes for the Newton Municipal School District as was collected the prior year. The millage rate for the previous year was 55.00. The millage rate for the current year is 55.00 with an additional increase for a shortfall note of 4.03 mills.
A millage rate of 2.4 for East Central Community College wil produce the same amount of revenue from ad valorem taxes for East Central Community College as was collected the prior year. The millage rate for the previous year was 2.5. The millage rate for the current year is 3.0, representing an increase of 0.5 mills.
The board will hold a public hearing on September 6, 2022 at 10:00 A.M. for the purpose of approving the 2022/2023 tax levy for Newton County.
