Funeral services for Mary Jo Harris were held at 2:00 pm Thursday, January 11, 2024 at Pleasant Ridge Missionary Baptist Church with Bro. Thomas Laird officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Harris, age 89, and a resident of Hickory, passed away Tuesday, January 9, 2024 at her home. She was a lifelong resident of Newton County and was a graduate of Beulah Hubbard High School and Meridian Junior College, School of Nursing. She was a nurse by profession, having worked at Rush Foundation Hospital. She was a member of Pleasant Ridge Missionary Baptist Church.
Survivors include her sons, Rick Harris (Malou) and Phil Harris (Peachy), both of Hickory; grandchildren, Amanda Whitman (Danny), Melissa Harris, Dylan Harris and Dustin Harris; great grandchildren, Mackenzie Adam, Macey Adam and Ella Whitman; sister-in-law, Syble Addy (Bobby) of Chunky; several nieces and nephews also survive.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, Richard Louis Harris; her parents, Therrel A. and Elma Chaney Crawford and one sister-in-law, Lou Nell Rasmussen (Jim).
Visitation was Thursday one hour prior to the services at the church.
Pallbearers were Matt Addy, Kenny Addy, Steve Felton, Steve Rasmussen, Steve Pugh, and Josh Ethridge.
Honorary pallbearers were Harold Hicks, Larry Crader, James Otis Swearingen and Arleigh Allen.
Newton County Funeral Home – South, 100 Old Hwy. 15 Loop, served the Harris family.
