Allie Jewel Gregory of Decatur, 97, peacefully went to be with her Lord on the Nov. 21 at her home surrounded by family and friends. She was born Dec. 9, 1919, to her parents, William Grover and Edna (Barnes) Allgood. On Oct. 13, 1935, Allie married Grady Gregory. Besides being a homemaker and raising her children, she worked at the Decatur Shirt Factory for more than 20 years. As we think about Allie the following words come to mind: family, church, friends, loving, giving, gardening and cooking.
Mrs. Gregory has been a faithful member of Crossroads Baptist Church since 1945, where she also raised her five children. She served as a role model to so many based on her faith and trust in the Lord. Besides living her life to honor God, her family was the most important thing to her. She especially enjoyed the holidays because her home was filled with joy and laughter as she was surrounded by her loved ones.
Memories were made as the stories were shared and she sang her favorite song, "Thank you Lord, for the Blessings on Me," which also reflected her outlook on life. She was always thankful for what she had, never wanting more, but always giving God the glory and praise.
Allie was a long-time member of the Conehatta Community Club. Because of her positive attitude and willingness to help others, she was awarded the Community Citizen of the Year award in 2013.
Mrs. Gregory never met a stranger and she treated everyone as family. Although she only had 77 grandchildren, she was known throughout the community as Grandma Allie. Her motto was to do something for others today, because you may not have tomorrow. Grandma will be missed by all that knew and loved her.
She was survived by two daughters, Glenda Jeffcoats of Decatur and Margene Todd of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; two sons, Grady Earl Gregory and Gary Gregory, both of Decatur; one sister, Alma Miles of Lawrence, 14 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; 25 great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Gregory was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, Grady Gregory; one son, Bobby Gregory; two sisters; three brothers; and eight grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Grady Floyd Gregory, Robbie Gregory, Melvin Todd, Robert Earl Todd, Wallace Mayes and Mickey Addy.
Honorary pallbearers were her grandchildren.
Milling Funeral Home of Union was in charge of the arrangements.
