Mrs. Iris Boggan, 88 of Decatur, MS passed away Monday, Sept. 9, 2019 at her home in Decatur. She is survived by one son, Charles Boggan and wife, Debbie, of Decatur; two daughters, Ada McGrevey and husband, Mike, of Decatur and Sarah Boggan and Rick Dodd of Cameron, Texas; two grandsons, Kyle McGrevey of Oxford, MS, and Matthew Boggan and wife, Calli, of Decatur; four granddaughters, Natalie May and her husband, Caleb, of Union, Emily Thompson and husband, Hal, of Decatur, Mandy Gunasekara and husband, Surya, of Decatur and Celia Rohrer and husband, John, of Decatur; 11 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Anne Macke of Clinton, MS. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Boggan was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Austin P. Boggan; and her parents, Ada Belle Pellegrene and Phillip Pellegrene.
Iris and her husband, Dr. Boggan, moved to Decatur in 1954 where they founded the Decatur Medical Clinic. She was a registered nurse, office manager and record keeper for the next 49 years. She joined the Decatur United Methodist Church and was highly involved in many civic and patriotic organizations on a local and state level.
Family was extremely important to Iris. She and Austin were married over 52 years and reared three children, which lead later to her becoming a grandmother and a great-grandmother. As a mom, she wore many hats: PTA member, Horse Show mom, Football mom, Band mom, Dance Review mom, Cheerleader mom and a chaperone to every school or church event from the 1960s until early 1980s. As a grandmother, she became a driver to many of these same events, as well the “most favorite person” to spend time with. Famously, upon becoming a grandmother her name was transformed from Iris to “Mama I.”
It is hard to write in words the impact Mama I had on her family, friends and community. Her soothing presence, quick wit and genuine love for the people around her will be sorely missed. Her legacy and spirit will live on in each of us who loved her.
