James Thelon Tune, 92, of Lawrence, died peacefully Tuesday, June 13, 2017, at his home in Lawrence. He was born Wednesday, Aug. 20, 1924, in Holly Grove, Ala.
Visitation was held from 10-11 a.m. Saturday, June 17 at Newton County Funeral Home – North in Newton. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 17 in the chapel at the funeral home. Burial followed in Newton County Memorial Gardens next to the funeral home. The Rev. Tom Sorrell officiated. Newton County Funeral Home – North was in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Tune was the president of the First National Bank of Newton from 1965 to 1983. He was a past officer of the Rural Development Association and on the board of directors for the Mississippi Regional Housing Authority. After retirement, he enjoyed spending his time restoring and repairing antique clocks.
He was a member of the Newton United Methodist Church.
The family would like to extend special thanks to Roshell Bogan and Johnny Pruitt, who became much more than caretakers for Mr. Tune.
Mr. Tune was preceded in death by his parents, Tillman L. and Beulah Cummings Tune, his wife, Carolyn Bufkin Tune; and three brothers, T. L., Jr., William S. and Dr. Leon J. Tune.
Survivors include two sons, Gary L. (Karen) Tune of Decatur, and Stuart C. (Debbie) Tune of Newton; eight grandchildren, Noelle Tune, Lyndsey Tune, Melissa Lowlavar, Marche Boone, Jeremy Tune, Lydia Greene, Jason Tune and Jamey Tune; and 19 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Jeremy Tune, Jason Tune, Jamey Tune, Lyndsey Tune, Dr. Brad Boone, Justin Greene and Matt Lowlavar.
