JoAnn Monk, 74, passed away on May 16, 2018, at her son's home in Arizona. JoAnn was born in Newton to Tennis and Maggie Thornton.
JoAnn was a hardworking, God fearing Christian and dedicated mother for her two sons and family. She always helped her friends in need putting others before herself. She will be missed by her family, friends and all that knew her.
She is survived by sons, Mason Monk (Gaylene) and Mike Monk (Carolyn); two brothers, Buddy Thornton and David Thornton; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Tennis and Maggie Thornton; two sisters, Linda Mann and Martha Nell Sanderson; and an infant daughter.
Visitation will be held from 5-8 p.m. Friday, May 25 at Newton County Funeral Home-South. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 26 at Newton County Funeral Home-South with Bro. David Thornton officiating. Burial will follow at Beat Line Baptist Church Cemetery in Conehatta.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial donation can be made to St. Jude's Children Hospital or American Cancer Society.
