Margie Blackwell Weems, 88, of Lawrence, died Thursday, July 6, 2017, at Bedford Care Center in Newton. She was born Saturday, Nov. 24, 1928, in Lake.
Visitation was held from 5-8 p.m. Sunday, July 9 at Newton County Funeral Home – South in Newton. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Monday, July 10 at Newton County Funeral Home – South in Newton. Burial will follow at Decedar Baptist Church Cemetery in Lawrence. Bro. Leon Stuart and Dr. Brian Rushing will officiate. Newton County Funeral Home – South is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Weems was a faithful member of Decedar Baptist Church in which she served as secretary and treasurer for many years. She held many officers in her club, The Busy Hands which is affiliated with the Mississippi Homemakers Volunteers. She worked at the Newton Company for more than 30 years. Mrs. Weems enjoyed cooking for her family and her friends, fishing, gardening and sewing. She will be remembered for her kind heart and willingness to serve God and others.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Murray O. Weems Sr.; her parents, Admiral Dewey Blackwell and Annie Stevens Blackwell; four sisters, Ethel Blackwell Shirley, Lorene Blackwell Jackson and Annie Kate Blackwell; and a brother, Dewey Elton Blackwell.
Survivors include her son, Murray O. Weems Jr. (Janet); a daughter, Linda Hutchinson (Bob); five grandchildren, Dent Weems, Subrina Weems, Summar Griffin (Jay), Courtney Rider (Neal), and Mark Westmoreland; and five great-grandchildren, Haley Griffin, Jordyn Landry, Valli Weems, Chloe Westmoreland and Caleb Westmoreland.
Pallbearers will be Farris Shirley, Harry Shirley, Chris Weems, Steven Blackwell, Donn Jackson and Hoop Weems.
Honorary pallbearers will be Buddy Weems, Danny Weems, Mark Boutwell, Jeffrey Walton, Jody Walton and Tyler Jackson.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Decedar Baptist Church.
