Graveside services for Mrs. Velma Lou White were held 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 4, 2019 at Union City Cemetery. Rev. Chris Shelton officiated. Stephens Funeral Home of Union was entrusted with the arrangements.
Mrs. White, 92, of Union passed away Saturday at her residence. She was a longtime educator teaching in the Decatur, Clinton and Newton School systems. She received bachelor’s degrees from the University of Southern Mississippi and Delta State and a master’s degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. During her career, she received numerous teaching awards including the District Star Teacher Award and the Dow Chemical Honor Teacher award. Mrs. White was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Union, a member of the Union Garden Club and the Retired Teachers Association.
She will always be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
Mrs. White is survived by her children, Stephanie Lou-Anne White, Troy D. White Jr. (Dianne) and Joseph Henderson White (Emmy); grandchildren, Troy ‘Trey” White III, Brittany White Brown (Keith), Lewis Henderson White (Jaclyn), Meredith McCullough White and Hazelle Gianna Alexandra Esposito; great-grandchildren, Paxton Ray Brown, Aiden Walt Brown and the unborn great-grandchild Landon Joseph White, who is due in September. She is also survived by her very special caregiver Peggy Trapp.
Mrs. White was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Annie Ruby Lewis; husband, Troy D. White Sr.; and sister, Annie Mae Vance.
The family would like to thank the medical and nursing staff at University of Mississippi Medical Center, Laird’s Hospital, Southern Care Hospice and Quality Hospice for the wonderful care that they provided to Mrs. White.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be made in her name to First Presbyterian of Union, Gideon’s International or the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation.
Visitation was held Monday evening from 5-7 p.m. at the funeral home.
