Michelle Logan passed away at home on May 31st in the company of her family after a lengthy bout with pancreatic cancer.
Michelle a/k/a Granchelle, daughter of Louie Floyd and Jimmie B. Buntyn, was born on September 12, 1960, in the Neville community of Neshoba County. Louie died when Michelle was ten. Jimmie B was left with Michelle, Marsha and Scoppa, a hog farm, two poultry houses, cattle, and a mountain of debt. Stooping with worn out tools, her hands hard as oak lumber, she worked and prayed to raise three fine children. Scoppa was lost in an automobile accident in 1985 as a high school senior, a hurt that still endures. Jimmie B died in 2018 and Marsha passed in 2020. Granchelle graduated from Union High School in 1978 and worked for attorney Edmund Phillips from 1979 to 1981 when she developed a conflict of interest by marrying Robert Logan, who was the lawyer next door. She attained a degree in business administration from ECCC and delivered Megan Elise Logan in 1983. Zachary William followed in 1984. She started as church secretary in 1986, had Jeffrey Andrew in 1987, and Madeline Grace in 1991 and transitioned to assistant librarian at Newton High School in 1996 where she worked until 2012. She earned a social work degree in the midst of these productive years in 2010 (all A’s) and started at East Mississippi State Hospital in 2012, then taking her final position at Child Protection Services from 2017 to 2023, where she was an adoption specialist.
Granchelle adored her family, but when the first grandchild was born in 2014 everyone else dropped a notch. There are nine grands: MaryEllen, Logan, Katie, Peyton, Bo, Eliza, Ben, Eloise and Caroline. The grandkids named their grandparents, Granchelle and Burdaddy, and they were the light of her life.
Grandchelle was a master tour guide, event planner, cook and concession stand organizer. She found the good things in every job, and that’s what she talked about at home. She developed warm relationships with co-workers and was the lady in the library who sewed on kids’ buttons or lent 50 cents for lunch.
She and Burdaddy carried on a low level sniping war for 42 years, largely for the entertainment of onlookers, but she was Burdaddy’s biggest supporter, keeping a supply of Sweet-N-Low in her purse for his coffee whenever they travelled. She was active in the Newton Methodist Church and focused her energy on helping those who were hurting or needy. In recent years she crocheted numerous baby blankets for friends and family.
Cancer was an unwelcome guest in 2022, but Granchelle battled it for more than 18 months, remaining active and never complaining about the pain. She loved projects, and this was one that required attendance at her grandchildren’s athletic events and recitals.
The family appreciates the care Granchelle received from Dr. Jennifer Eubanks and the staff at Anderson Cancer Center, Anderson Hospital and Harper’s Hospice.
