Johnnie Jean, also known as NeeNee to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, sister, and friend to her family and all who knew her. She had a nurturing spirit to care for all that came through her open doors. She spent most of her life as a homemaker, taking pride in cooking and caring for her family, as well as helping take care of other children in the community. She was a devout Christian and very faithful member of Chunky Baptist Church where she served in many capacities through the years. At the time of her death, she was the longest tenured member of Chunky Baptist church.
Johnnie Jean is survived by her children, Mike Luke (Christi), Tena Gressett (Billy) and Jeremy Luke (Carrie) all of Chunky, MS, and Vonda Rowzee (Robert) of Newton, MS; grandchildren, Hannah Wren (Jordan), Jordy Luke (Emily), Jess Luke (Olivia), Casey Donald (Kyle), Maggie Luke; and step-granddaughter, Melissa Lowlavar (Matt). Great-grandchildren, Maddie Luke, Cohen Luke, Livi Wren, Ivy Wren, Jon Luke Wren, Lennen Wren, Molly Donald, Callie Donald, and Jack Reynolds Donald; step-great-grandchildren, Dylan, Emily, and Huston Lowlavar, and Taylor and Jack Grace. Brother-in-law, Jim Miller, as well as a host of nieces, nephews, and a special family friend, Jimmy Kittrell.
She is preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Jerry Luke; her parents, Harold and Willie Mae Flake; and sister, Shirley Miller.
Pallbearers were Jordy Luke, Jess Luke, Jordan Wren, Kyle Donald, Jimmy Miller, Tony Miller, and John Robert Williamson.
Honorary Pallbearers were Roger Shirley, Jackie Johnson, Stan Nelson, and the Friendship Sunday School Class of Chunky Baptist Church.
The Luke Family would like to express special appreciation to Gentiva Hospice of Newton for their loving care for our Mama.
In lieu of flowers, the Luke Family suggests sharing memorial contributions with the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation or St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
Funeral Services for Mrs. Johnnie Jean Flake Luke began at 12 Noon, Saturday, September 20, 2025, at Chunky Baptist Church with Reverend Hal Bates officiating. The Family received guests from 10:00 AM until 11:45 AM prior to funeral rites. Interment was in Chunky Cemetery. Robert Barham Family Funeral Home was honored to be entrusted with the arrangements.
