June 28, 1924 - October 8, 2024
For 100 years, God blessed the world with Mary Blount Logan. Mary passed away peacefully at her home in Newton on October 8. She was a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend.
Mary was born on June 28,1924, in Decatur, Mississippi. She worked as a medical technologist at Newton Hospital for 50 years, serving as head medical technologist for the majority of her tenure, before retiring when she was in her 80’s. During that time, she continued her education and graduated from Mississippi State University. When her husband of 45 years, Joe Logan, passed away, Mary became an integral part in the operation of their cattle farm. Up until just a few years ago, it was not unusual to find her in the middle of a pasture working with cows, fishing at her pond, or cutting her yard on her Cub tractor. She was a master at making homemade cornbread dressing, for which there is no recipe, and for her blueberry cakes created from the massive blueberry bushes from her back yard. Mary was an avid bridge player, playing twice a month. She was an active member of the Newton Methodist Church and attended for as long as she was able to travel.
Mary is preceded by her parents, John Elsie and Eva Harbour Blount; her husband, John Joseph (Joe) Logan; her son, David Kipling (Kip) Logan; her daughter-in-law, Susan Collins Logan; her brothers, Billy Earl Blount and Charles Robert "Charlie" Blount; and her sister, Bobbye Nell Blount Tucker.
She is survived by her two children, John Joseph (JoJo) Logan, Jr. and Jan Logan Fitzhugh (Bob); her seven grandchildren, Clancy Logan Mitchell (Lee), Rivers Logan Avery (Kenny), John Joseph (Jody) Logan, III (Lindsay), Jaime Fitzhugh Shafter (Steve), Lauren Fitzhugh Crawford (Matt), John Ryan (Ryan) Logan (Andrea), and Laura Ashley Logan (Mark Barron); and eleven great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Doloros (Chee Chee) Thomas and her brother, John Blount, as well as numerous relatives and friends.
