Funeral services for Michael "Mike" Hammond will be held on Wednesday, November 1, 2023 at 2:00 P.M. at Newton Christian Church. Burial will follow in Mt. Zion Congregational Methodist Cemetery in Union under the direction of Newton County Funeral Home.
Bro. Cade Price will officiate.
Mr. Hammond, age 79, and a resident of Decatur, passed away Sunday, October 29, 2023 at his residence. He was born in Newton County and was a graduate of Newton High School. During his professional career he was employed at La-Z-Boy South where he was a charter employee, and Peavey Electronics in Decatur where he retired after many years of service. He was a member of Newton Christian Church and loved his family. He was a long term Mason at Evergreen Lodge #77 at Decatur. He enjoyed family research, fishing and target practicing.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Jean McElhenney Hammond; his parents, Johnny C. and Elizabeth Garvin Hammond and his brothers, Evon Hammonds, J.C. Hammond and Sammy Hammond.
Survivors include his sons, Ricky Hammond (Brittanie) of Vonore, TN and Clay Hammond (Nena) of Decatur; grandsons, Wiley Hammond (Jennifer) and Blake Posey; granddaughter, Kristina Robinson; three great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Wiley Hammond, Chris McElhenney, Shane Hitchcock, Richard Townsend, David Cleveland, and Jerry Cornelson.
Visitation was on Tuesday, October 31, 2023 from 5:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. at Newton County Funeral Home - North in 9998 Hwy. 15 North, Newton, and also will be thirty minutes prior to the funeral on Wednesday at Newton Christian Church.
