Newton County Elementary School had reason to celebrate last week when the third grade reading assessment scores were released.
The school placed second in the entire state with a passing percentage of 92.5. What makes this feat even more impressive is that the standards got tougher.
State testing results in Mississippi range from 1-5, with one being the lowest and five being the highest score attainable. In previous years, third-grade students had to score at least a two to pass on to fourth grade. This year, however, students needed at least a three on the scale.
We applaud the hard work of the teachers, students and parents to be prepared for the new standards.
Union and Newton both saw their scores drop, but there is a good chance that the students will be able to advance upon retesting. But considering with increase in standards, the scores were pretty good overall. We applaud all of your efforts as the schools continue to adapt to the new standardds.
