Our Opinion: Huge honor for Chaney, program

By EDITORIAL STAFF,

Last week, Newton County softball coach Justin Chaney received another honor to his trophy case. This time, he was named National Softball Coach of the Year by the National High School Athletic Coaches Association.

Most of us here in Newton County already knew that. During his tenure heading the Lady Cougars, his teams have won 17 state championships overall, 10 in fastpitch softball and seven in slowpitch. It didn’t take long for the news to get around Newton County last week, as current and former players, fellow coaches and school administrators all took time to call or text Chaney with their congratulations.

This award looks at a lot of the on-the-field accomplishments from the past season, but it’s a tribute to Chaney and all of the players and coaches who helped build the program Newton County has today.

So we would like to extend our congratulations to Coach Chaney and everyone connected with the softball program. It is an honor well deserved, and we wish you continued success in the future.
