Thursday was our most active severe weather day that we’ve had in many years. The National Weather Service’s tornado count statewide is approaching 30, including numerous within a 25-mile radius of Newton County. Our thoughts and prayers go out those who have been affected by the storm.
We would also like to recognize all of the workers who sacrificed their nights and weekends to help get power restored and helped storm victims begin the process of picking up the pieces.
These people are our first responders, our power company linemen, our utility and public works employees, our dispatchers and volunteers who may have showed up with chainsaws and casseroles, as political cartoonist Marshall Ramsey’s cartoon so perfectly describes the Mississippians who show up to help.
On Thursdays, those workers were out responding to crashes on the highways. They were directing traffic on roads where trees and power lines blocked safe passage. Then, they stayed out late working on power lines to restore power, most of everyone was back on line by Monday morning.
