Union High School offers several different sports for students to take part in—football, baseball, softball, tennis, and many more. For the upcoming year, Union High School is also forming a girls’ volleyball team for grades 9-12. Many parents and Union residents may not quite grasp what volleyball actually is and why this is an extremely good thing for Union High School. Many colleges and universities offer scholarships for volleyball, and Union residents should have an understanding of volleyball.
As far as the sport of volleyball goes as a whole, the game is a team sport that consists of two teams with six players per team. A seven-foot net separates the two teams, and the teams compete in rounds known as rallies. They try to score points by grounding (hitting the ball to the ground) the ball on the opposing team’s side. This is also known as a kill.
A game begins by one player serving the ball (throwing the ball and hitting it) to the opposing team. The opposing team can touch the ball three times at most before hitting the ball back to the other side, and the same player cannot touch the ball two consecutive times.
This continues until one team makes a kill by grounding the ball, scoring a point and winning the rally. Teams can also win and lose rallies by committing faults. Nevertheless, the team that wins the rally serves the ball on the next rally. Volleyball also involves many different techniques and strategies in order for teams to be effective.
Because the rules tend to be complex and probably unknown to most people in Union, Union High School held an open practice for all interested students this past week. Volleyball will add a new sport to Union High School’s Athletics program and will allow students to seek volleyball scholarships while enjoying themselves. Many different colleges and universities across the nation offer excellent women’s volleyball scholarships. The University of West Alabama and Mississippi College are two of the closest ones to Union to offer these scholarships.
In order to provide a greater variety of sports for Union High School students, Union High School has added a girls’ volleyball team to their offerings. Hopefully, with a basic understanding of the rules, parents and other Union residents will have a better understanding of volleyball and will support this team like all of the others. This is a tremendous opportunity for female students at Union High School, and this will only strengthen Union High School as a whole.
