We would like to congratulate our local powerlifting student-athletes on an excellent season this year! The Union Yellowjackets’ Powerlifting team won the Boys 2A State Championship at the MHSAA State Meet this past Friday in Jackson. Sebastopol finished second in the 2A division. The Newton County Cougars’ team placed second as the Girls’ 4A runner-up.
For Union, this was their sixth team state championship in the past eight years. They also brought home four individual state championships. For Sebastopol, their second place finish came with two individual state championships. Sebastopol senior TJ Yates was named to the 2024 Super Twelve as the state’s top overall lifter in 114 lb. weight class. As for Newton County, the second place finish this year follows up their sixth place finish from 2023.
It has been an eventful and successful year for these teams in 2024 and with many of these student-athletes returning next year, the future remains bright.
