Both Newton County and Sebastopol brought home individual state championships last week in the state power lifting meet.
Newton County’s Jarvis Tucker won the 275-pound weight class while Sebastopol’s Luke Winstead won the 308-pound weight class.
Class 4A
The Newton County powerlifting team finished in fifth place in the state with 14 points and had one state champion in Jarvis Tucker.
In the 198-pound weight class, Newton County senior Deyvon May just missed the podium as he finished in a tie for third with 1,380 pounds. May had a 565-pound squat, a 250-pound bench press and a 565-pound dead lift. Itawamba’s Thomas Kline won with a total of 1,570 pounds.
In the 275-pound weight class, Newton County junior Jarvis Tucker took home first place, winning by 75 pounds. Tucker finished with a total of 1,465 pounds with a 600-pound squat, a 290-pound bench press and a 575-pound dead lift.
In the 308-pound weight class, Newton County senior Jarvis Tucker finished second in the state, falling 45 points short of South Pike’s Jaylin Barnes. Usry had a total of 1,445-pound total with a 600-pound squat, a 270-pound bench press an da 575-pound dead lift.
Class 1A
The Sebastopol powerlifting team finished seventh in the state with 12 points while Tupelo Christian won with 39 points.
In the 114-pound weight class, Sebastopol’s T.J. Yates was second with a total of 655 pounds. Yates had a 235-pound squat, a 115-pound bench press and a 305-pound dead lift.
In the 165-pound weight class, Jess Johnson failed to post a total after scratching on the squat. He had a 185-pound bench press and a 405-pound dead lift which was second in the weight class.
In the 308-pound weight class, Sebastopol junior Luke Winstead won the state championship with a total of 1,230 pounds. Winston had a 500-pound squat, a 280-pound bench press and a 450-pound dead lift.
