The Union powerlifting team didn’t win a team state championship, but the Yellowjackets had the strongest person at the entire meet.
Union’s Jon Perry lifted 1,690 pounds which led all weight classes in all classes, making him the strongest person in the MHSAA.
Union’s Semaj Burnside was also named to the MHSAA’s Super 12 list after winning the 132-pound weight class with a 1,130-pound total.
Here is a roundup of the other schools that competed in the state powerlifting meet last week.
Union boys
The Union powerlifting team finished third overall in the state and had three individual state championships.
In the 114-pound weight class, Matthew Sharp finished fourth with a 610-pound total with a 235-pound squat, a 125-pound bench and a 250-pound squat. In the 132-pound weight class,
Union’s Semaj Burnside won the 132-pound weight class with a 1,130-pound total. Burnside had a 500-pound squat, a 200-pound bench press and a 430-pound bench press.
In the 181-pound weight class, Nolan Smith finished second with a 1,265-pound total. Smith had a 510-pound squat, a 270-pound bench press and a 485-pound dead lift.
In the 198-pound weight class, Union’s Brody Smith also finished second with a 1,310-pound total. Smith had a 585-pound squat and a 210-pound bench press along with a 515-pound dead lift.
In the 220-pound weight class, Union’s Jordan Smith won his class with a 1,415-pound total. Smith had a 600-pound squat, a 290-pound bench press and a 525-pound dead lift.
In the 242-pound weight class, Jon Perry repeated as state champion with a 1,690-pound total that led all weight classes. Perry had a 765-pound squat, a 270-pound bench press and a 655-pound dead lift. Perry’s squat and dead lift led all lifters in class 3A.
Lake boys
The Lake boys finished second in Class 2A with 29 points, behind Velma Jackson. Lake had one individual champion.
Lake’s Jamarious Green won the 123-pound weight class with a 930-pound total. Green had a 355-pound squat, a 170-pound bench press and a 405-pound dead lift.
In the 148-pound weight class, Lake had two lifters finish in the top three. Jonahvan Hawkins finished second with a 1,150-pound total. Hawkins had a 470-pound squat, a 185-pound bench press and a 495-pound dead lift. Mitez Ickom finished third in the 148-pound weight class with a 1,115-pound total. Ickom had a 450-pound squat, a 200-pound bench press and a 465-pound dead lift.
In the 165-pound weight class, Jeremiah Mayers finished fourth with a 1,110-pound total. Mayers had a 435-pound squat, a 22-pound bench press and a 455-pound dead lift.
In the 220-pound weight class, Lake’s Logan Stroud was third with a 1,330-pound total. Stroud had a 535-pound squat, a 255-pound bench press and a 540-pound dead lift.
In the 242-pound weight class, Carter Callahan finished second with a 1,400-pound total. Callahan had a 575-pound dead lift, a 260-pound bench press and a 565-pound dead lift.
In the 275-pound weight class, Josh Posey was third with a total of 1,360 pounds, just 30 pounds off the top lifter. Posey had a 575-pound squat, a 285-pound bench press and a 500-pound dead lift. Lake’s Brayden Clark was fifth in the weight class with a total of 1,240 pounds. Clark had a 530-pound squat, a 235-pound bench press and a 475-pound dead lift.
Newton County boys
In Class 4A, Newton County finished tied for sixth overall with New Albany with 12 points, thanks to a pair of second-place finishers.
In the 132-pound weight class, Tristan Pierce was fourth with a 965-pound total. Pierce had a 340-pound squat, a 175-pound bench press and a 450-pound dead lift
In the 165-pound weight class, Payton Hardy was second in the 1,320-pound weight class. Hardy had a 520-pound squat, a 275-pound bench press and a 525-pound dead lift.
In the 220-pound weight class, Juan Brown was second with 1,460-pound total. Brown had a 565-pound squat, a 340-pound bench press and a 555-pound dead lift.
Sebastopol boys
The Bobcats finished ninth overall with 12 points and had one second-place finisher.
In the 114-pound weight class, Conner Cater finished second overall with a 630-pound total. Cater had a 240-pound squat, a 125-pound bench press and a 265-pound dead lift.
In the 181-pound weight class, Lowry Moore finished fifth with a 945-pound total. Moore had a 350-pound squat, a 175-pound bench press and a 420-pound dead lift.
In the 198-pound weight class, Lathan Jones finished third with a total of 1,200-pound total. Jones had a 460-pound squat, a 240-pound bench press and a 500-pound dead lift.
In the 308-plus pound category, Travis Johnson finished fourth overall with an 810-pound total. Johnson had a 315-pound squat, a 145-pound bench press and a 350-pound dead lift.
Newton County girls
In Class 4A girls, Newton County was third overall with 24 points and had one individual state champion.
In the 114-pound weight class, Ella Hammond was third with a 660-pound total. Hammond had a 220-pound squat, an 85-pound bench press and a 235-pound total.
In the 123-pound weight class, Kaylyn Clayton had a 680-pound total. Clayton had a 270-pound squat, a 110-pound bench press and a 300-pound dead lift.
In the 132-pound weight class, Avery Mangum was seventh overall with a 560-pound total. Mangum had a 245-pound squat, an 80-pound bench press and a 235-pound dead lift.
In the 148-pound weight class, Anna Reese Bass was fifth overall with a total of 650 pounds. Bass had a 275-pound squat, a 95-pound bench press and a 280-pound dead lift.
In the 165-pound weight class, Aubriella Upton was fifth with a 655-pound total. Upton had a 265-pound squat, a 100-pound bench press and a 290-pound dead lift.
In the 181-pound weight class, Sakiya Wesley finished second with an 825-pound total. Wesley had a 350-pound squat, a 125-pound bench press and a 350-pound dead lift.
In the 242-pound weight class, Mackenzie Platt was second with a 900-pound total. Platt had a 415-pound squat a 140-pound bench press and a 345-pound dead lift. Rhaley Easley finished fourth in the weight class with a 305-pound squat, a 115-pound bench press and a 305-pound dead lift.
