Services for Mr. Gerald Wayne Welch were held 11:00 am, Saturday, March 29, 2025 at The First Baptist Church of Union. Dr. Jon Martin and Pastor Matthew Fancher officiated the service. Burial was held at Union City Cemetery.

Visitation began at 9:00 am prior to service.

Mississippi's 2025 Municipal Primary Election Day is less than 24 hours away. The April 1 ballot features municipal offices across the state.

Polls for the Municipal Primary will open at 7:00 a.m. and close at 7:00 p.m. Any voter in line at 7:00 p.m. is legally entitled to cast a ballot.

Madalyn Oliphant of Hickory was crowned Miss Mississippi Teen USA 2025 on Saturday, March 29, at the Pearl River Resort in Choctaw. Representing Miss East Central Teen, Oliphant is a 2024 graduate of Newton County High School and current student at East Central Community College.

Newton County Academy observed World Down’s Syndrome Day last Friday with 4-year old Cage Wall and his family, from Newton. As students arrived at school that morning , Cage and his family greeted everyone with arm bands, stickers, and smiles to celebrate the occasion.

Mulch Matters More Than You Think

Lucked up on several overstuffed bags of freshly mown oak leaves and grass clippings on a neighbor’s curb. There were no pines or magnolias, so the leaves were uniform, and the yard sported a few wildflowers so I knew the clippings weren’t treated with herbicides.

Being in my truck, of course I snagged them all as free mulch.
