Drawing inspiration from her love for animals and her pug, a Newton resident has created her very own small business that strives to provide human-grade delicious and healthy treats for dogs and cats.
Prior to becoming a mom to two and a teacher at Newton County Academy, Erin Tramill made a promise to Pongo, her beloved pup that passed from cancer, to always do anything she could for animals.
In 2024, Tramill stayed true to her promise after learning that her pug, James Taylor, is basically allergic to ‘air and tap water’, leading her to research and make food that was safe for her pup to eat, as well as others.
“He can’t eat anything off the shelf, he could only eat specialty dog food,” said Tramill. “So, one day I was thinking, ‘Well, I have to make special things for him. What if we just turn this into a little side business’?”
After tasking her mother, an English teacher for 25 yeas, to come up with a cute name that would combine ‘pugs’ and ‘bakery’, Tramill’s new business soon came into fruition: The Pugtisserie.
The mission of The Pugtisserie is simple: to create wholesome, natural treats that pets love and their people trust.
“I use all human-grade ingredients,” she said. “And I try to make them just as naturally as I can. No artificial preservatives.”
According to Tramill, a year ago she started off with just a peanut butter biscuit, which is a healthy protein alternative to chicken, which James is allergic to. Today, she offers a variety of other options.
“The pumpkin-based treats are really popular, then I have a pumpkin and apple treat that they absolutely love. Another big hit is the sweet potato jerky,” Tramill said. “My gelatin treat is like a gummy bear for dogs. I call it my Thanksgiving flavor because it combines a turkey or beef broth with cranberry. They’re good for any age because they’re real soft.”
The Pugtisserie also offers cheddar cheese biscuits, tuna bits, doggie birthday cakes. And they offer deliveries every Sunday.
“And every week on my Facebook page, I upload a special treat for the week,” said Tramill. “So always be on the lookout for the special!”
