Basketball: County teams fall to tough competition

It was a rough week for the Newton County basketball teams as they returned from the Christmas break with a pair or losses.

The Lady Cougars fell 61-51 to Leake Central and 55-20 to Choctaw Central. The boys also dropped a pair of tough games, falling 76-73 to Leake Central and 67-54 to Choctaw Central.

Union improves to 11-3 overall for season

The Union Lady Yellowjackets got off to a good start in region play with a pair of wins last week.

The Lady Yellowjackets opened with a 50-41 win over Philadelphia on Tuesday and then beat Eupora 49-39 on Friday.

Basketball: NCA girls rack up trio of wins

The Newton County Academy girls continued their strong play and picked up three more wins this past week.

The Lady Generals improved to 13-2 on the season as they beat Sylva Bay 53-33, Grace Christian 40-33 in overtime and the Meridian Lady Flyers 41-22.

Newton County Academy tennis coach Pete Mazzella thought his girls’ team might have a chance at a state championship this season if he and assistant David Burt could get the lineup right.

Apparently, they figured it out as the NCA girls won another state championship, edging out St. Augustine to claim the Class 3A girls’ title.
